About the Pitt State Dance Team

  • Perform at all Pitt State Home Football Games

  • Perform at all Men’s and Women’s Home Basketball Games

  • Travel to MIAA Basketball Tournament Games

  • Entertain fans at various campus and off-campus events

  • Lend time and talent at community service events

  • Team is comprised of between 12-16 athletes

  • Compete at UDA College Nationals in January each year

 

Team Requirements

  • You must be able to attend all rehearsals and other related activities Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Student athletes must have at least a 2.5 semester GPA and a 2.0 cumulative PSU GPA.

  • Student Athletes must also be a full-time student, currently enrolled in 12 hours each semester.

 

Scholarship:

While members do not receive a standard scholarship, they do receive a modest stipend at the end of the season that is based on their participation in events.

 

Time Commitments:

Being on the team requires a significant time commitment, but it's definitely worth it! The following is an approximate estimate of the amount of time you'll be expected to commit throughout the various seasons, however, it should be noted that this is just an estimate.

Summer (May-July)

Team Weekend: A weekend at the beginning of June where we meet on campus to fit uniforms and meet to prepare for the upcoming season.

Summer Requirements: Athletes will receive materials over the summer such as routines they will need to work on at home and memorize as well as workout plans to prepare for the upcoming season.

Summer Camp: A 5 day camp on the campus of PSU where athletes team build, practice, learn routines, and sidelines.

Fall (August-December)

Practice: Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 3-6:30PM;

(NOTE: Additional practices WILL be scheduled during part of November and all of December for those who make the National’s team. These members will most likely be required to return early from Christmas break for practice.)

Performance: 1-2/week on average. These performances include Football games, Basketball games, Welcome Week events, and additional campus events.

Additional: Members will be expected to devote time to advertising, fundraising and team social events.

Winter (January-March)

UDA National Cheer and Dance Competition: 6 days in Orlando, Florida to compete.

Practice: Monday/Wednesday/Fridays: 3-5:00PM;

Performance: January/February: 1-2/week for Basketball; March: about 1/week for MIAA Basketball Tournament;

Additional: Members will be expected to devote time to advertising, fundraising and team social events.

Tryout Timeline:

Audition dates will be announced no later than March 1st. With auditions dates in April.

Elements included in the audition:

  • Informational Meeting (via. zoom)

  • Registration (online submission)

  • Interview (in-person or zoom)

  • In-person Tryout (in-person)

    • Technique/skills

    • Sideline

    • Combo

    • Mini interview

    • Fight Song

 

Technical Skills:

Although there is no minimum technique requirements, typically our team incorporates the following skills in their performances:

  • Double and triple pirouette (right and left)

  • Turn combination in ala seconde'

  • Kick lines

  • Leaps & Jumps: Calypso, Turning Disk, Firebird ect.

  • Leg hold turns

  • Acro skills : kip up, side cartwheel aerial, front aerial, front/back handsprings, any other acro skills you can demonstrate.
